History in our Countryside: Bus trip to Leeston and Ellesmere, Sun 27 Sept 2026

This was a trip with a very challenging and soggy start, and a sunny, successful ending! Rhodes Medal recipient Wendy Dalley, a member of the Ellesmere Historical Society (EHS), met us at St Mary’s Anglican Church in Irwell. After an interesting talk by a fourth-generation local farmer and lifelong parishioner, we were on our way to Leeston. The Eel Project, with its metal sculpture and information boards, was explained by the President of the EHS. We were welcomed to St John’s Anglican Church by the Vicar of Ellesmere, Revd Margaret Neate, formerly a tutor in the History Department at UC, and we explored the building with beautiful background hymns being played for us on the organ. The group had a hot drink in the parish hall while we ate our packed lunch. By then, the rain had stopped and the various buildings of the Selwyn Heritage Centre could be visited, along with the professional archive room and library of the EHS. By 3pm, the sun was breaking through the clouds, and we headed off on a drive past Waihora Lake Ellesmere, the Lakeside Memorial Hall, and Sedgemere, en route to the Hone Wetere Church at Taumutu. Our photo at Ngā Moki Marae shows a very happy group under a blue Canterbury sky. Snow was gleaming on the Southern Alps and Banks Peninsula, and the countryside was lush and green as we started our return journey to Christchurch. As Professor Geoff Rice said: “Expect the unexpected!” The next next bus trip is planned for Sunday 7 March 2027 to Rāpaki Marae – keep an eye out for details of how to register.
