University of Canterbury postgraduates enrolled in the History Program, or in other disciplines undertaking historical research, are invited to submit applications for the Canterbury Historical Foundation’s Research & Travel Grants.
Eligibility
These grants are intended to help allay expenses accrued during postgraduate research of a historical nature. Grants will not normally exceed NZ$3,000. Applicants must be currently enrolled part time or fulltime in a postgraduate degree at the University of Canterbury.
Costs which might be supported include travel to libraries, archives, galleries, Marae, historical sites and museums to consult historical materials unavailable elsewhere, digitisation of historical records and travel to professional conferences to present research findings with a significant historical component.
Applications
Applications, which should be sent to the Foundation’s Secretary, will close on 31 March and 30 September each year. They should include:
- A description of the student’s research project which makes clear how it contributes to historical knowledge.
- An explanation of what the grant is intended to support e.g. travel to archives or a conference. This explanation should include information about the necessity of travel, i.e., the unavailability of the materials to be consulted locally or digitally; the importance of the conference to the student’s professional development and research.
- An itemised budget, which outlines costs accrued or projected. Applicants should also indicate any other financial support already given, promised or being applied for.
- The names, email addresses and telephone numbers of two academic referees who are familiar with the project and can give an opinion on it. In most instances this will be the student’s supervisors or heads of programme.
- A short biographical statement and CV.
